International friendlies preview: Loew aims high

Despite securing qualification to Euro 2012 in style, Joachim Loew wants more from Germany ahead of Tuesday s friendly against Poland.

Germany thrashed Austria 6-2 at the Veltins Arena on Friday, with Mesut Oezil s hat-trick and goals from Lukas Podolski, Andre Schurrle and Mario Gotze booking a place in next year s European Championship finals in Poland and the Ukraine.

Since losing to Spain in the final of Euro 2008, Loew has moulded a youthful Germany side into one of the most attractive and attacking teams in international football.

They are already being talked about as the most likely challengers to Spain s dominance at the tournament next June and July.

But Loew has been quick to point out that his team must overcome sterner challenges than the likes of neighbours Austria if they are to win a fourth European crown.

Do you really think that well-known, strong national teams are going to fall to their knees just because we beat Austria?, Loew was quoted in Bild newspaper.

Anyone who knows me knows that I am not just satisfied with winning alone.

No, I want us to continually improve.

It is clear that everyone wants to win the (Euro 2012) title.

However, it is still a little early to be speaking about this.

In Tuesday s other international friendlies, Argentina play Nigeria in their second match under new coach Alejandro Sabella.

The Czech Republic, who drew 2-2 with Scotland at Hampden Park on Saturday, host the Ukraine in Prague.

The United States will look to bounce back from a 1-0 defeat to Costa Rica when they play Belgium in Brussels.

Elsewhere, Venezuela take on Guinea and Paraguay face Honduras.

On Monday, Brazil meet Ghana at Fulham s Craven Cottage, while Bolivia are up against neighbours Peru.
