International Friendly Preview: Chile v Iraq

Chile will hope to gain momentum ahead of the next round of FIFA World Cup qualifiers when they take on Iraq on Wednesday.

Jorge Sampaoli s men head into the contest at Brondby Stadion in Denmark sitting fourth in the CONMEBOL qualifying section, five points clear of Uruguay, who occupy the intercontinental play-off spot.

However, they next face a tough encounter with Venezuela on September 6, knowing that a win would put them on the brink of securing a place at the finals in Brazil next year.

Their preparations will begin with a test against Iraq, whose own World Cup hopes were ended after they were finally eliminated from the Asian qualifying zone following a 1-0 defeat to Japan in June.

Chile will look to Juventus pairing Mauricio Isla and Arturo Vidal to lead their challenge, while Barcelona s Alexis Sanchez and Manchester United s Angelo Henriquez are also included in the squad.

There is also a return for Palmeiras midfielder Jorge Valdivia, who is back in the squad for the first time since October 2011.

Sampaoli s men have not lost since a 1-0 defeat to Peru in March and their results in that spell, which include a 2-2 draw with Brazil and 2-0 win against Uruguay, have served to underline the strength of their exciting squad.

Iraq, by contrast, are a team in transition.

The country s Under-20 side did reach the semi-finals of the World Cup last month, but success at senior level has so far eluded them.

Vladimir Petrovic s men have not scored in their last four encounters, with no player having netted more than one goal in the ill-fated World Cup qualifying campaign.

They will have their sights set on ending that drought on Wednesday, with Alaa Abdul-Zahra their most prominent striking

threat, but that is likely to prove difficult against a side very much in form.
